abstract = {In southern Europe, irrigation is the major water user and thus, development of operational tools that support decisions aiming to improve irrigation management, is of great importance. In this study, a web-based participatory decision support system for irrigation management (DSS), based on the principles of UN FAO’s paper 56, without requirement for any special monitoring hardware to be installed in each field, is evaluated for the case of a commercial wine grapevine (Vitis vinifera ‘Vertzami’) located at Epirus (northwest Greece), for two successive years (2021 and 2022). The soil moisture time series that were generated by the DSS’s model were compared to those measured by soil moisture sensors. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) ranged between 2.98–3.22% and 3.63–4.06%, respectively, under various irrigation practices and goals. Irrigation resulted very high yields and Crop Water Productivity (WPC) was 20–44% improved when following the DSS’s recommendations. The results also confirm potential pitfalls of sensor-based soil moisture monitoring and rainfall estimations using mathematical models. Finally, the value of water meters as practical sensors, which could support efficient irrigation management, is underlined. In every case, mindful application of decision support systems that require minimum or no hardware to be installed in each field, could extensively support growers and agronomic consultants to test, document and disseminate good practices and calculate environmental indices.},

abstract = {In Greece – like many Mediterranean countries – irrigation is by far the major water user. In this framework the development of operational tools that support decisions and provide recommendations aiming to improved irrigation management is of great importance. In this study a web-based participatory system for irrigation management (the system hereafter) that operates from 2015 at the plain of Arta (NW Greece) is evaluated for the case of kiwifruit, an evolving crop for the area which is characterized by high water requirements. Water usage and soil moisture were monitored in a typical for the area orchard of Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward’, during three irrigation periods (2016, 2017 and 2018). At the same time the system generated recommendations for future irrigation applications, based on the outcomes of a water balance model that followed the principles of FAO’s paper 56. The model took into account: (a) measurements of weather parameters from agrometeorological stations in the area; (b) soil, crop and irrigation system parameters; (c) time and volume of the actual irrigation applications and (d) weather data forecasting. The soil moisture time series that were produced by the system's model were compared to those measured by the soil moisture sensors. The largest root mean square error (RMSE) was found to be 5,1%. It was also found that following the system's recommendations, could lead to significantly fewer irrigation applications and less water usage per year compared to the applied practice.},

abstract = {<jats:p>The large-scale surface-water monitoring infrastructure for Greece Open Hydrosystem Information Network (Openhi.net) is presented in this paper. Openhi.net provides free access to water data, incorporating existing networks that manage their own databases. In its pilot phase, Openhi.net operates three telemetric networks for monitoring the quantity and the quality of surface waters, as well as meteorological and soil variables. Aspiring members must also offer their data for public access. A web-platform was developed for on-line visualization, processing and managing telemetric data. A notification system was also designed and implemented for inspecting the current values of variables. The platform is built upon the web 2.0 technology that exploits the ever-increasing capabilities of browsers to handle dynamic data as a time series. A GIS component offers web-services relevant to geo-information for water bodies. Accessing, querying and downloading geographical data for watercourses (segment length, slope, name, stream order) and for water basins (area, mean elevation, mean slope, basin order, slope, mean CN-curve number) are provided by Web Map Services and Web Feature Services. A new method for estimating the streamflow from measurements of the surface velocity has been advanced as well to reduce hardware expenditures, a low-cost ‘prototype’ hydro-telemetry system (at about half the cost of a comparable commercial system) was designed, constructed and installed at six monitoring stations of Openhi.net.</jats:p>},

abstract = {Olive cultivation is expanding rapidly in the northwestern part of Greece, under both rainfed and irrigated practices. Irrigation can result in larger yields and economic returns, but trade-offs in the water–energy–pollution nexus remain a controversial and challenging issue. This study presents an environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Greek olive orchard systems in the plain of Arta (Epirus), comparing rainfed (baseline), Decision Support System (DSS)-based (smart) irrigation practices and farmer experience-based (conventional) irrigation practices. The contributions in this paper are, first, to provide a first quantitative indication of the environmental performance of Greek olive growing systems under different management strategies, and second, to detail the advantages that can be achieved using smart irrigation in olive cultivation in the Greek and Mediterranean contexts. Eighteen midpoints (e.g., climate change, water scarcity, acidification, freshwater eutrophication, etc.), two endpoints (damages on human health and ecosystem quality), and a single score (overall environmental impact) were quantified using the IMPACT World+ life cycle impact assessment method. The LCA model was set up using the OpenLCA software v1.10.3. The functional units were 1 ton of product (mass-based) and 1 ha of cultivated area (area-based) on a cradle-to-farm gate perspective. Irrigated systems had the lowest impacts per mass unit due to higher yields, but showed the highest impacts per cultivated area. The DSS-based irrigation management could reduce water and energy use by 42.1% compared to conventional practices. This is translated into a reduction of 5.3% per 1 ton and 10.4% per 1 ha of the total environmental impact. A sensitivity analysis of impact assessment models demonstrated that the benefits could be up to 18% for 1 ton of product or 22.6% for 1 ha of cultivated land. These results outline that DSS-based irrigation is a promising option to support less resource-intensive and sustainable intensification of irrigated agriculture systems in the plain of Arta.},

abstract = {Since agricultural water use has a substantial share in Greece, irrigation scheduling forecast and management tools constitute significant assets. This study illustrates the concept and implementation of the IRMA_SYS, a regional, user-friendly computer/mobile-based service. IRMA_SYS was implemented as open, fully customisable, modular software capable of estimating field specific crop water requirements and irrigation scheduling at multiple scales, from farm to water basin level. The estimation of irrigation water requirements and irrigation scheduling is based on a modification of the conceptual FAO 56 approach and its tasks are accomplished based on historical and forecast agrometeorological data, along with site specific crop and soil-water data. In this context, IRMA_SYS is addressed to irrigation professionals who have the background and the experience to interpret the information provided and use the system for setting up irrigation schedules, plan and record irrigation events as well as self-training regarding irrigation management.},
